Asa Wright Nature Reserve

The Asa Wright Nature Centre is a bird watcher’s dream. This lush rainforest is filled with plants, reptiles, amphibians, many many birds and other wildlife and covers a large amount of land. Situated 17 km along the Blanchisseuse road and at the center of the island of Trinidad, it was one time previously an old cocoa and coffee estate. It is the easiest place to observe and perceive the Channel-billed Toucan, Bearded Bellbird, the famous oilbird, Mankins leks, trogons, woodcreepers, honeycreepers, tanagers, over 10 species of hummingbirds, and above 160 more species of birds. On one hike alone you could probably come into contact with 50-60 species of birds. Ocelots can also be found here. There is lastly an estate which includes an inn and restaurant. This restaurant serves callaloo soup, made with ingredients from the on-site garden, it is the dish they are known for serving. The Asa Wright Nature Centre is a place where people can find many different types of birds and other nature while enjoying some hot callaloo soup.
